Chapter 18

Sitting at the kitchen table in the ranger station, Jett adjusted a steel mesh band on the last of the metal camera housings. “So, what kind of configuration do you use to place these in the forest?”

“Basically, a circle.” Mara snapped a battery into a camera. “We place the distress call machine in an open area, maybe along a trail. Ideally, we put some raw deer meat with it, to help entice our cat with a smell it likes, but with all this rain, I’m not sure how much that will matter. The distress signal is the center point. We place three or four cameras around that, spaced between twenty and thirty feet away, looking inward. A second ring of cameras faces outward.” Standing, she set the loaded housing on the table. “That way, we can record the cat coming and going. We want a clear line of sight, if we can find one. We don’t want this cat to work any harder than necessary.”

Jett placed her camera housing on the small stack they’d built and sat back in her chair. “Now we just need our four-legged friend to come get its picture taken.”

“Yep.” Mara picked up a small red rag and ran it under her fingernails. “After we haul all this out to a good spot in the morning, we’ll spend a few hours rigging the cameras…” She smiled at Jett. “Then, we wait. We ring the dinner bell and see who shows up.”

“Those housings are heavier than I expected.” Jett went into the living room and retrieved her phone, opening the camera app and checking the light in the kitchen. “I guess I was expecting plastic, not steel.”

“Yeah, they’re pretty heavy duty. They’re made to withstand the weather, but also animals and thieves.” She glanced at Jett’s phone and shifted in her seat. “How do we do the… the—what are we calling it? My interview?”

“Like we’re doing right now, like two friends talking.” Jett aimed the phone camera at her squirmy interview subject. “I ask questions and you explain.” She lowered the camera, smiling. “You have a good camera presence. You have a natural radiance that viewers will like, and you’re passionate about what you do. That’s important. Viewers can spot a phony a mile away.”

“Okay.” Pushing her hair over her shoulder, Mara glanced around. “Do I need to do anything with my hair, or….”

Jett raised the phone, gazing at Mara’s image on the screen. “No. You’re very pretty. Very natural-looking. You have a clear beauty with some rough edges underneath. It’s a great look. Outdoorsy and athletic.”

Mara shrugged. “I try to stay in shape. I run the parkour course almost every morning, but as a ranger, I move around a lot during the day. It’s a pretty nonstop job.”

“Mention some of that as we talk.” Jett moved around the kitchen, looking for the best lighting and whatever angle got Mara in the frame with the equipment. “Whatever feels natural in the conversation. It adds depth. Ready?”

The ranger rubbed her palms on her jeans.
